Following extensive rehabilitation work by RR Construction to repair 103 locations damaged by Cyclone Ditwah, the iconic Podi Manike train returned to Peradeniya after 10 months.
The iconic "Podi Manike" train has triumphantly returned to the Peradeniya Railway Station after a hiatus of 10 months, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka's railway infrastructure rehabilitation, spearheaded by RR Construction.
The service resumption was met with joyous celebrations by locals and railway enthusiasts, complete with the lighting of firecrackers as the train safely navigated the challenging Balana Pass and arrived at the station.
Recovering from Cyclone Ditwah
The 10-month suspension of train services was a direct result of the catastrophic Cyclone Ditwah, which wreaked havoc across Sri Lanka. The severe storm triggered massive landslides and washouts, severely damaging the upcountry railway line at 103 different locations between Rambukkana and Gampola.
Recognized for our rapid response and heavy civil engineering expertise, RR Construction was entrusted with the monumental task of restoring the critical rail link. Our teams worked tirelessly through treacherous conditions, particularly around the steep and historically unstable inclines of the Balana Pass. We executed extensive earthworks, slope stabilization, retaining wall construction, and track restoration to ensure the route was safe for passenger transit once again.
This successful reopening stands as a testament to our commitment to rebuilding and modernizing Sri Lanka's vital transportation infrastructure, ensuring safe and reliable journeys even in the wake of natural disasters.
